We celebrate anniversaries for three English composers: the birthday of Gerald Finzi (125th) and the deaths of Benjamin Britten (50th) and John Dowland (400th). Music includes Britten’s Hymn to St Cecilia; Finzi’s Seven Poems of Robert Bridges and White-Flowering Days; and Dowland’s Flow, My Tears and Come Again, Sweet Love.
Finzi’s White-Flowering Days is from the part-song collection A Garland for the Queen, assembled for the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (Britten composed his opera Gloriana for the occasion) and inspired by the Triumphs of Oriana for Elizabeth I. We include two selections from the Garland: Michael Tippett’s Dance, Clarion Air, and Silence and Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
