Gary Steigerwalt and Dana Müller are the world's leading performers of Helen Hopekirk's piano music — and this is a rare opportunity to hear them play in Scotland.Helen Hopekirk was born in Portobello, Edinburgh, in 1856. She spent her life doing something remarkable: taking the ancient melodies and rhythms of Scottish folk tradition and weaving them into composed music of extraordinary depth and beauty. The result is music that sounds like it came from somewhere very old and somewhere very personal at the same time — rooted in this country's landscape and culture in a way that almost no other composed music is.
Scotland forgot her. Her music is almost never played here today.
On 22 May, Steigerwalt and Müller bring Helen Hopekirk home. The programme includes works drawn directly from Scottish folk melody alongside original compositions that carry that same emotional weight — among them pieces from Iona Memories, Five Scottish Folksongs, and Two Tone-Pictures. If you have never heard Hopekirk's music, this is where to start. If you care about Scotland's cultural heritage, this is an evening that matters.
The concert takes place at the Parish Church of St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, one of the city's most beautiful historic churches. Doors open at 19.15.
