St Woolos Cemetery opened in 1854, is one of the most historically important cemeteries in Wales. As the first municipally built cemetery in Britain, it holds particular significance, and is listed on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Interest in Wales, where it is protected for its heritage value. This special tour places the spotlight on the Commonwealth War Graves, offering a fascinating insight into their work and learn about some of those who served in the First and Second World Wars. We visit some of the graves, each one a powerful reminder of the human stories behind the conficts.
The tour lasts approx. 60 mins and covers 600 metres on paths and grass with uneven ground and slopes.
Some car parking is available through the entrance on Bassaleg Road, Newport NP20 3PY . PLEASE NOTE, the cemetery gates close at 4.45pm so may be better to park outside the cemetery on the later tours.
There are no facilities or toilets on site. Please bring water if required.
Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.
Dogs are not allowed in the cemetery.
Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.
The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.
The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1171947) and Scotland (SC051982).
