Curious About Mahjong? Learn to Play in a 2-Part Beginner Series
About this Event
Learn to Play Mahjong
Have you been curious about Mahjong but felt unsure where to begin?
With so many versions of Mahjong, from Chinese and Hong Kong styles to the tile-matching games many people see online, it can feel confusing to know where to start.
This series teaches American Mahjong using the rules and official playing card of the National Mah Jongg League, with a thoughtful beginner-friendly approach designed to make the game feel approachable, understandable, and enjoyable from the very beginning.
Most beginners are introduced to everything at once: tiles, the card, the Charleston, gameplay, passing, and strategy, often before the tiles themselves even feel familiar.
Our beginner class series takes a different approach.
Session 1 Mahjong - Learn the Basics
In Session 1, you will begin by actively working with the tiles from the very start: seeing them, identifying them aloud, connecting them to related tiles, building patterns, and gradually discovering how those patterns connect to the official National Mah Jongg League playing card.
This hands-on approach helps you begin recognizing the language and structure of the game before having to make gameplay decisions under pressure.
Session 2 Mahjong - Game Flow & Strategy
By Session 2, the tiles, patterns, and card begin to feel more familiar, allowing you to shift into how the game is actually played, including the Charleston, game flow, and beginner strategy concepts, including the 6 Strategy Rules.
