🌿 Cumberland Nature Reserve Camping/Hiking Weekend – Digital Detox! 🌿
If you’ve joined us on a camping trip before, you already know what to expect: Fun, Fun, and More Fun!
Cumberland is a 560-hectare private nature reserve located just east of Pietermaritzburg. The reserve offers a variety of stunning habitats, including pristine savanna, woodland, valley thickets, and wetland.
The landscape features dramatic cliff faces, deep valleys, waterfalls, and wooded gorges – perfect for landscape photography. The Rietspruit Stream flowing through the reserve attracts numerous species of dragonflies, frogs, and other water-loving creatures. The Umgeni River, forming the reserve’s boundary, is home to many species of freshwater fish and even resident crocodiles!
🦜 Cumberland is home to:
-Over 300 bird species
-More than 50 butterfly species
-Over 200 wildflower species
-30 mammal species
-An abundance of indigenous trees and grasses
-A healthy snake population, including resident African Rock Pythons!

Hikes:
Friday Afternoon: Horseshoe Bend
Distance: 5-6 km
Duration: 2-3 hours
Grading:
Regular Hiker: Grade 1
Casual Hiker: Grade 2
Saturday Morning (Main Hike): The Kranz
Distance: Approx. 6-7 km
Duration: 4 hours
Grading:
Regular Hiker: Grade 1
Casual Hiker: Grade 2
Saturday Night: Night Hike (Exclusive for Overnight Visitors-scorpion hunt!)

Sunday: The Gorge (Not suitable for beginners due to challenging terrain)
Distance: 5-6 km
Duration: 4 hours
Grading:
Regular Hiker: Grade 2
Casual Hiker: Grade 3
What to Bring:
For Hiking: Snacks, water, a cap, a backpack, comfortable shoes/boots and your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery!
A hiking stick is highly recommended for the gorge hike – bring your own or purchase one from us for only R299.
For Camping: Bring your own camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, mattress, lights, etc.) and all your food and drinks.
Don’t have gear? No problem!
We offer camping gear rentals:
-2-Man Tent: R300 for the weekend
-4-Man Tent (Spacious): R450 for the weekend
-Sleeping Bag + Mat: R150 per person
Please Note:
This is a non-electrified campsite (no electricity), but there’s running water available for bathing and washing (not suitable for drinking, so please bring your own water).

We require 6 confirmed bookings to proceed with this event. If the minimum isn’t met, the event will be canceled and refunds will be processed.
The event will go ahead rain or shine, and will only be canceled or postponed under extreme weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, hail, or heavy rain). A little rain won’t hurt anyone, and the bugs will stay away! 😉
No credit or refund if you are a ‘No Show’.

Grading of Hikes:
Grade 1: Easy, minimal fitness required
Grade 2: Moderate, requires moderate fitness
Grade 3: Moderate, physical fitness advisable
Grade 4: Strenuous, physical fitness essential
Grade 5: Very strenuous, high level of physical fitness required
