Culture, Power + Protest: How Might Culture Respond to Power?

• Activists, or potential activists, that want to explore how culture can inspire new methods of organising and protesting
• Creative practitioners who want to share their skills and connect with others through social justice activism
• Tech for good designers and coders who want to learn from history and contribute their knowledge to a shared resource of protest resources
• Learners who want to familiarise themselves with cultural studies, art history and social justice
• Managers of organisations that want to learn how they can get more involved in activism in authentic ways

• History: Explore how art and technology have been used to create social change, from the rebellious histories of music and poetry, to the social innovations and design frameworks of groups like the Situationists
• Toolkit: Access a rich list of collaboratively compiled protest actions and case studies
• Creativity: Understand the relationship between the fast-growing creative industries and social justice movements
• Connect: Learn about organisations you can join to put your new found skills to the test
• Technology: Debate the role of advanced technology in helping or hindering social justice causes

In this session we look at different ways to understand power, and introduce key thinkers from struggles such as racial justice, queer liberation, workers’ rights, climate action, indigenous landback efforts and multi-species struggles. By the end of this class, participants will be equipped with a richer vocabulary to describe the relationships between social justice movements.

Olive Conner is creative facilitator, design lecturer and innovation strategist who has worked for major cultural institutions and grassroots organisations. With a background in cultural and literary theory, their teaching approach is informed by decolonial and queer perspectives. They are part of the Studio61 social arts collective who design a variety of mixed media experiences.
