In play therapy practice, we are often provided with the beautiful opportunity to work with clients of diverse populations. Play therapists must have self-awareness of their own perceptions and biases and an understanding of their own and others’ cultures; they must understand how culture may impact the lives of clients and the play therapy process and be equipped with tools, skills, and knowledge to provide competent and culturally sensitive treatment. The play therapist must become culturally competent in order to most effectively manage cultural components within the treatment process, such as addressing cultural issues that may arise or help facilitate pride in the client’s own culture.
Participants will achieve success in the following learning objectives:
- Participants will explore the history of how cultural considerations have been utilized within psychotherapy practices and play therapy
