The 30th Anniversary of the Cultural Concerts on Colfax ( CCC) kicks off Wed. Nov.5th at the Aurora Fox( 9900 E. Colfax Aurora CO.) with a tribute to Native American Heritage Month. The family-friendly free concert features the Seven Falls Dancers and Grupo Huitzilopochtli beginning at 12 noon-1:00 pm.
The Aurora Fox concerts are one of the Metro area’s longest-running free multicultural musical collaborations celebrating the multitude of cultures in Colorado. Traditionally the series runs from November through May of each year and offers once a month ethnic and folk arts programs free of charge to local schools and the community.
Sponsored by the Colorado Folk Arts Council in conjunction with the Aurora Fox Theater Chicano Humanities Arts Council and Metropolitan State University of Denver Chicana/o Studies Department Journey Through Our Heritage program the series was instituted to ensure area school children of immigrant families could celebrate their diverse cultures. “ It also gives MSU Denver students who help create the lineup every year an opportunity to interact with the large community of artists teachers and act as role models for the school-age kids” noted Nelson Moreno an MSU Denver JTOH alumnus who was one of the kids in the audience 15 years ago.
The kick-off concert features the Seven Falls Indian Dancers who are a family dance troupe representing four generations of American Indian dancers. They hail from the Pawnee Flandreau Santee Sioux tribes of Oklahoma and South Dakota. The troupe has been dancing throughout Colorado for over 32 years.
Also featured is Grupo Huitzilopochtli founded by the late Capitan Raul Chavez who immigrated to Colorado from Mazatlan Mexico in 1969. He brought with him his knowledge of the traditional Aztec dances of his ancestors. For almost half a century Raul Chavez maintained an open-door policy welcoming all who wished to celebrate Mexica culture through danza.
“ We have both these groups to educate the folks about the diverse cultures of indigenous people who have an ancient history here,” said Ron Gehauf board member of the Colorado Folk Arts Council and founder of the CCC series. “It is well documented that for hundreds of years, there was trade contact between the American Southwest and the Aztec Triple Alliance Empire areas of Mexico.”
“This is a very special year for us,” added Gehauf. “The Scientific Cultural Facilities District of Arapahoe County has funded the concert series for three decades. To have both Mexican and North American Native traditions represented is a bridge between Hispanic Heritage Month and Native American Heritage Month that we have always dreamed of. ”
