This course is intended to build cultural competence among social work, health, and other professionals in working with d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing community members. With a specific focus on education and exploration, the workshop roots its priority in developing cultural awareness, challenging us in our current practices, and pushing us to actively take steps in activating best practices and allyship.
Learning Objectives: Participants will
- Define and differentiate between the Deaf Community, d/Deaf persons, and Hard of Hearing persons
- Define and differentiate how services are often delivered to hearing clients differently than to those who are d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- Identify and discuss cultural competencies and some best practices that social work professionals in various roles can use when working with clients who are disabled, and more specifically those in the d/Deaf and Hearing of Hearing communities
- Acknowledge and discuss hearing privilege and discuss practical strategies that allies can use towards creating more inclusive service environments
- Read about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the legislation’s relationship to the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities
- Identify tangible next steps to implement at our practices, our agencies, our classrooms, and other professional environments that incorporate tools learned in the workshop to more inclusively serve the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Why Attend?
We hope to encourage social work professionals to reflect and deepen their understanding of themselves and the field of social work as changemakers and as human beings.
