Directed by Kelly Reichardt, The Mastermind stars Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim in a restrained, character-driven crime film set in America circa 1970. The story follows an unemployed family man and amateur art thief who sets out on his first heist - a plan that looks airtight on paper, but begins to fray once the real-world weight of consequence, ego, and human error kicks in.
Reichardt strips the genre back to behaviour rather than bravado: quiet observation, tension built through process, and the slow collapse of certainty. O’Connor brings nervous volatility to the film’s centre, while Haim anchors it with a calm, watchful presence - a pairing that keeps the film human even as everything tightens around them.
