Shunji Iwai’s All About Lily Chou-Chou is a hypnotic portrait of teenage isolation in the early internet age. Told through message boards, shifting friendships, violence, and a shared devotion to an imaginary pop idol, the film captures the fragility of youth with a dreamlike, almost spectral tone.
Its use of digital cameras and online culture was groundbreaking in 2001, and its cult reputation has only grown. A favourite of cinephiles who gravitate toward emotional honesty and atmospheric filmmaking.
