Die Ausstellung in der Galerie des Polnischen Instituts Berlin lädt in die Welt des unabhängigen Computerspiels Cubature ein. Es handelt sich um ein neues Projekt an der Schnittstelle von Art Game und Puzzle Game, entwickelt vom polnischen Indie-Studio Cyber Kids on Real. Die Spielschöpfer Dominik Cymer und Oliwia Hajn schlagen „eine interaktive Erfahrung vor, in der der Raum als aktives, reagierendes System fungiert“.
Die Präsentation überträgt die szenografischen Lösungen und narrativen Konzepte des Spiels erneut in den physischen Raum und schafft in der Galerie eine immersive Umgebung. Diese setzt sich aus Objekten, einer interaktiven Installation mit Elementen der Videoaufzeichnung, grafischen und filmischen Bildern, Klang, Bewegung sowie schließlich dem Spiel selbst zusammen.
Das Computerspiel Cubature verbindet auf spielerische Weise Einfachheit mit Komplexität. Ein kindlich einfacher Mechanismus trifft auf eine Ästhetik, die von Kunstinstallationen inspiriert ist, sowie auf einen außergewöhnlichen Soundtrack. Das Projekt hebt sich von anderen zeitgenössischen Games durch den Einsatz authentischer, szenografischer Filmsets ab, die sich auf die DIY-Ästhetik und traditionelle Animation beziehen.
Das rohe Bild und die handgefertigte Szenografie, basierend auf einem Würfel mit einer Kantenlänge von einem Meter, bilden das grundlegende Spielelement – den Kubus. Cubature betont konsequent seinen analogen Charakter: Seine Bewohner werden gefilmt und nicht gerendert.
Das Spielprinzip besteht darin, modulare Zellen zu verschieben und zu verbinden, die – Level für Level – ein wachsendes Gefüge von Cubature bilden. Die Spielhandlung offenbart in aufeinanderfolgenden „Zoomstufen“, wie aus den einfachsten Elementen eine eigenartige Komplexität entsteht, in der der Spieler zugleich den Status eines aktiven Subjekts und der „kleinsten Zelle“ einnimmt.
Im Galerieraum können die Besucher das Spiel sowohl aus der Perspektive eines Spielers steuern als auch – indem sie die Installation betreten und für einen Moment den titelgebenden Cube bewohnen – physisch Teil der Spielwelt werden.

The exhibition at the gallery of the Polish Institute in Berlin invites visitors into the world of the independent video game Cubature. This is a new project at the intersection of art game and puzzle game, created by the Polish indie studio Cyber Kids on Real. The game’s creators, Dominik Cymer and Oliwia Hajn, describe it as “an interactive experience in which space acts as an active, responsive system.”
The presentation brings the scenographic solutions and narrative concepts of the game back into physical space, creating an immersive environment in the gallery. This environment consists of objects, an interactive installation with video elements, graphic and film imagery, sound, movement, and finally, the game itself.
The puzzle video game Cubature combines simplicity with complexity in a playful way. It features a childlike simple mechanic, paired with aesthetics inspired by art installations and a unique soundtrack. It stands out among contemporary gaming projects through the use of authentic, scenographic film sets that reference DIY aesthetics and traditional animation. The raw visuals and handmade scenography form the basic module of the game: the cube.
At every step, Cubature emphasizes its analog character, which is why its inhabitants are filmed rather than rendered. The gameplay involves moving and connecting modular cells that, board by board, form the expanding tissue of Cubature. The game’s narrative reveals - through successive “zoom-outs” - how peculiar complexity emerges from the simplest elements, in which the player simultaneously holds the role of an active agent and the “smallest cell.”
In the gallery space, players will be able to engage with the game both from a traditional player perspective and by physically becoming part of the game world - by entering the installation and inhabiting the titular Cube for a moment.
