Cuan Beo Oyster Experience
About this Event
Departing from Eyre Square in Galway City, this immersive experience takes you to Clarinbridge, where you'll discover how oysters have shaped local communities for millennia—from ancient shell middens left by the first coastal settlers, to the famous native oyster fishery of Galway Bay, to modern oyster farming and the pioneering restoration of native oyster reefs.
Along the way, you'll hear stories of traditional fishing methods, explore the cultural heritage of the Galway Bay oyster, and learn how Cuan Beo and its partners are working to restore one of Europe's most important native oyster ecosystems.
The tour concludes with a live oyster-opening demonstration featuring guest oyster openers, followed by a tasting of Galway Bay oysters paired with local beer.
Guests will then have time to visit historic Clarinbridge, whose association with the early years of the Oyster Festival helped establish Galway Bay as a world-renowned oyster destination. (An optional lunch is available at guests' own expense before returning to Galway City by coach). We aim to return to Galway city by approx. 3pm depending on traffic on the day.
