Berlin Room [Rock'n'Roll] [Rocksteady]
One man band, several continents. King Automatic touches down at Control on Sunday, September 6.
For nearly 25 years, the French musician has been stretching the one-man-band format well beyond its garage-rock origins. A former drummer for punk outfit Thundercrack, King Automatic went solo at the beginning of the 2000s and started building an entire band around himself.
Drums, guitar, keyboards, harmonica and percussion are sampled and looped live, gradually stacking into something much bigger than a one-man setup would suggest.
Musically, he doesn't stay put either. Garage punk and rock'n'roll meet Jamaican rocksteady, rhythm & blues, French yé-yé, exotica and West African rhythms, with years of touring adding further influences from South America and Eastern Europe.
Across releases for Voodoo Rhythm Records, King Automatic has turned that unlikely collection of references into a sound unmistakably his own: part garage-rock racket, part one-man orchestra.
