My mum bought me a copy of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap the week it came out, because I liked the song Jailbreak; I saw it on the ABC music program Flashez. The Australian release had a cool drawing of the band playing pool and looking tough. My sister told me to put the ‘CONTAINS THE HIT SINGLE’ sticker over Angus Young’s fingers so mum wouldn’t see it - I thought he was doing the universally-recognised ‘peace’ sign, but he wasn’t. I sang ‘Big Balls’ at the dining table as I thought it was definitely the best song I’d heard about team sports. I went to school and told my mates I’d bought the best record I’d ever heard, and in the ensuing week three friends gave me blank cassettes so I could record it for them. Mum told me to give them back because why should she be paying for records only for other kids to tape for free?
Mum had a point, but I distributed the tapes free of charge anyway…the first of many more. Anyway, looks as though I’m still giving away songs (by other people) free of charge, with my band Crème Brûlée. I know that the alcohol is still oozing out of every pore, and you didn’t get anything you really wanted for Xmas, but we’re putting you on notice for this one on 31 January. Mixtape is a fantastic venue run by great people with impeccable taste, great beer and tops grub. It’d be great to see you there.
