About this Event

📚Lecture: "Crying in the Club: The Science of Big Feelings"
🎤Speaker: Emilia Sherifi (PhD candidate in Clinical Psychology at Queen’s University)

Why can one text message ruin your entire day? Why does an old song suddenly make you emotional years later? And why do we sometimes know we're overreacting but can't seem to stop?

In this lecture, we'll explore what happens in the brain and body when emotions become overwhelming, what emotions are actually for, why some common coping strategies backfire, and which approaches are genuinely supported by research.

Come for the science, stay for the validation, and leave with a better understanding of why big feelings happen and what to do when they do

Emilia Sherifi is a PhD Candidate in Clinical Psychology at Queen’s University. Her research focuses on suicide in young people, with a focus on how emotional experiences and impulsivity contribute to daily risk. Emilia is currently wrapping up her residency at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and will be working at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto beginning in the Fall. For fun, you can find Emilia playing tennis, making jewelry as a silversmith, or picking up a new hobby every other week.
