CRST v. EEOC: A Dialogue About Lessons Learned Over 20 Years

Join us for an in-depth discussion on CRST Van Expedited, Inc. v. EEOC, 578 U.S. 419 (2016). Originally filed in the Northern District of Iowa (NDIA) as a sex discrimination class action against the Cedar Rapids-based trucking company, this landmark Title VII case spanned over two decades. The extensive litigation generated 21 Westlaw decisions, three published Eighth Circuit rulings, and a unanimous 2016 U.S. Supreme Court decision. The Supreme Court reversed the Eighth Circuit and affirmed the District Court, holding that a defendant does not need a favorable ruling on the merits to be considered a "prevailing party" entitled to attorneys' fees—a rule that remains controlling law today.
