CROQUIS, The Architecture of the Mediterranean is a box-set compilation that spans a lifetime of architectural travels and art. In addition to working as a practicing architect at Perkins + Will Miami and teaching at the School of Architecture at the University of Miami, an inveterate wanderer who invariably takes his sketchbook with him wherever he goes. The result is a treasure-trove of architectural drawings of Spain, Portugal, Tuscany, Greece and Morocco in which Gelabert-Navia has employed his artistic talent, contemporary experience and academic expertise to produce enchanting images of buildings, cities of the region that, in addition to capturing an architectural moment or movement, also express the soul of the place being documented. This gorgeous collection features five lavishly produced volumes of ten individual prints in watercolor paper suitable for framing. The collection demonstrates how the right gaze can both interpret and preserve the timeless architectural riches of humanity.

Jose Gelabert-Navia was born in Havana in 1954. With the advent of the Cuban Revolution, he moved to Spain and then to Puerto Rico. He attended Cornell University where he graduated with degrees in Architecture and Fine Arts. In 1978 he moved to Venezuela where he practiced and continued his studies. Returning to the United States, he continued his practice and in 1996 started the Miami Studio of Perkins&Will, which he led for sixteen years and from which he recently retired. His professional career has always been parallelled with an academic one. In 1981 he began teaching at the University of Miami where he is a Tenured Professor and former Dean. Twenty-five years ago he founded the School of Architecture’s Rome Program. He is the author of numerous articles and has published seven earlier books of drawings published by Oscar Riera-Ojeda on Taos/Santa Fe; Italy; China; Rome; Miami Beach; and Coral Gables.
