This live webinar, offered by Calgary Counselling Centre, provides a practical approach to crisis de-escalation. It focuses on the techniques clinicians may use in a community-based setting to manage threatening, aggressive, or agitated client behaviour. The course will discuss the principles, strategies and techniques used in de-escalation. The webinar is interactive: participants will have designated time to ask questions and initiate discussions.
Target audience: Social workers and Clinical psychologists

Credit: 1 continuing education credit

About the instructor
Sarah Rosenfeld, MSW, RSW is a Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work from McGill University and a Master of Social Work (Clinical Specialization) from the University of Calgary. She has over twenty years’ experience working in mental health, child protection, and health care settings. Sarah has held numerous counselling and leadership positions in the not-for-profit sector. Currently, she is the Associate Director of Counselling at Calgary Counselling Centre. Sarah regularly provides accredited courses to helping professionals, and customized workshops to organizations in crisis de-escalation.
Learning objectives
After attending this course, participants will be able to:
- Define de-escalation.
- Explain the principles and specific strategies used in de-escalation.
- Compare and contrast the two main types of aggressive behaviour (“hot and cold”) and the de-escalation tactics used in their management.
- Apply relevant de-escalation techniques in their practice.
