WORKSHOP INFO:
Centering Deaf Space: Language, Power & Accountability
Presented By Rachel Boll, M.A., CDI
This interactive workshop analyzes how language use shapes Deaf-centered spaces in environments shared by Deaf and Hearing professionals. Participants will explore whether organizations maintain formal or informal language policies, and how accountability is supported to ensure language accessibility and prevent language oppression.
Using real-world scenarios, the session will address common challenges, such as choosing to speak instead of sign, and how these behaviors relate to audism, linguistic exclusion, and violations of community norms and professional ethics, including the RID Code of Professional Conduct. Participants will engage in discussion and guided activities to identify the impact of these behaviors and develop practical strategies to redirect communication and reinforce Deaf-centered practices.
This workshop invites participants to reflect on their roles in maintaining equitable, visually accessible environments and to leave with actionable tools to foster collective accountability in their spaces.
Workshop Goals:
- Explain how speaking in Deaf spaces relates to audism and linguistic exclusion.
- Describe approaches to maintaining accountability in shared environments.
- Identify features of Deaf-centered spaces and language expectations.
- Apply strategies to redirect communication toward accessibility.
