Creek, Fossil & Rock Walk on an 11th Generation Tennessee Farm
Come spend a couple of hours exploring the creek, rocks, and fossils hidden across our family farm just outside Franklin, Tennessee.
This is not a classroom geology lesson. We are getting our feet wet, walking the creek, turning over rocks, looking for fossils, and learning how to read a little of the history written into the land beneath us.
Our family has worked this property for 11 generations, and the landscape tells a story much older than we do. Middle Tennessee is shaped by limestone, ancient seas, springs, caves, and karst geology, and you can see evidence of that history throughout the creek.
During the walk, I’ll also share fossils that have been found right here in the creek so you can see some of the different things that have turned up on the property over the years.
We will explore:
• Fossils found naturally in the creek and surrounding rock
• How to recognize some of the fossils common to Middle Tennessee
• Why this area has so much limestone
• How water shapes the landscape and creates caves, springs, sinkholes, and other karst features
• Interesting rock formations along the creek
• The natural history of the land and how the creek continues to change it today
You do not need to know anything about rocks or fossils before you come. Curiosity is enough.
And if you find a rock or two along the way that feels especially interesting or special to you, you are welcome to take them home as a little piece of the experience.
Expect approximately two hours outside at an easy, exploratory pace.
We will sign waivers and do a brief review of safety and look at some fossils found here on the farm then we will head to the creek.
We will be walking through natural creek areas, wooded sections, and uneven terrain. Depending on recent weather and water levels, your feet may get wet.
This is a real working family farm, not a manicured park or commercial attraction. You may encounter mud, slippery rocks, insects, wildlife, roots, uneven ground, and all the other things that come with spending time outdoors.
That is part of the experience.
Groups size
Walks are intentionally kept small so everyone has time to explore, ask questions, and actually see what we find along the way.
Families
Families are welcome. Children who enjoy creeks, rocks, fossils, getting dirty, and exploring usually have a particularly good time.
Parents and guardians are responsible for determining whether the terrain is appropriate for their child and supervising them throughout the experience.
A few important things to know
This experience takes place on private property.
The exact farm address and parking instructions will be provided to registered guests before the event.
No outside animals or pets are permitted on the property.
Because this is an outdoor experience, weather and creek conditions matter. If conditions make the walk unsafe, we will reschedule the event.
Come prepared to get a little dirty, probably get your feet wet, find something interesting, and look at Middle Tennessee from the ground up.
You may never look at an ordinary creek rock quite the same way again.
REFUNDS
Tickets are nonrefundable. If you’re unable to attend, you may transfer your ticket to another available date with at least 24 hours’ notice. Because this is an outdoor experience, weather and creek conditions may occasionally require us to reschedule and you’ll be rolled over to a future date.
