Creek Walk with Destinee Whitaker (5th Saturday Hike)

Join the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance as we highlight the neighborhood greenspace, Cascade Springs Nature Preserve. This 5th Saturday Hike experience is a special walk in tributaries of Utoy Creek led by expert Destinee Whitaker!
During the creek walk we will explore nature from a different perspective by seeing how water moves through urban landscapes and its impact on our local creeks. There will also be an opportunity to see/learn how to test the water quality at the site.
We will be walking on trails, through trees, and in the creek, so please pack as little as possible to avoid losing belongings. To ensure safety water levels and quality will be monitored leading up to the event. This is an urban stream, so if trash is present, we will have materials to help clean up the creek along the way.
Destinee Whitaker is a Master’s student and Research Fellow at Georgia State University, pursuing a degree in Geosciences with a concentration in Water Science. Her work is driven by a strong commitment to environmental justice, with a focused interest in urban water quality and equitable water access.
Packing List/ What to Wear
- Preferably long sleeved water resistant material top (cool-dry, dry-fit, etc.) if not, short sleeved is acceptable
- Long pants that are comfortable (loose fit jeans, outdoor pants, sweatpants, etc.)
- Long socks
- Calf high rain boots OR Waterproof outdoor shoes OR Wader boots
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
- Hand sanitizer
- Waterproof phone case
- A Water bottle filled with water
Some items like boots, bug spray, and sunscreen in limited quantities will be provided by the WAWA team on a first come, first serve basis. If you already have any of the following items, please bring along for your own comfort.
