This hybrid symposium showcases project results from the Writing for Success grant. Educators, writers, scholars, and students are invited to participate in presentations about implementing an author study in 5th grade classrooms, creative writing and podcasting workshops for students, and digital humanities connections to teaching literacy.
During the symposium, the Flannery O’Connor Institute for the Humanities will release the newly crafted unit of study featuring the texts about Flannery O’Connor for middle grades readers. This unit is aligned with Georgia Standards for Excellence for fifth grade English Language Arts and is open-source and free to use.
K12 teachers who register for the symposium by April 15 can enter to win one of 3 P8 podcasting setups for their classroom! (Must attend in person.)
Writers attending include Mary Carpenter, Kerry James Evans, Acree Graham Macam, Natalie Nelson, Kerry Beth Neville, and Sandra Worsham. Speakers also include local educators Angela Adside and LaShonda Hurst and Writing for Success student mentors.
Registration is available at https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/4a4a60ec33c74605a6ea87219dd3bc05 and there is no cost to attend. The schedule will be made available to registered attendees on May 1.
The Writing for Success Grant is a 100% federally funded project of $385,000 that aims to increase reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in the Milledgeville/Baldwin County community. The contents of this symposium were developed under a grant from the Department of Education. However, those contents do not necessarily represent the policy of the Department of Education, and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.
