How can a museum become part of the climate solution? And how can art help us imagine what comes next?
Join us at CMCA in Rockland on Wednesday, December 9, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. for Creative Spaces, Climate Strategies - a happy hour conversation about art, buildings, and the work of getting to zero.
This year CMCA received a $25,000 grant from the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative to launch the CMCA Carbon Drawdown Initiative, a feasibility study to move our building's electrical and mechanical systems away from fossil fuels by 2030. We're bringing in building science experts to audit our energy use, establish a carbon baseline, and map a practical path to decarbonizing lighting, heating, and water systems.
We think a museum should practice what it hangs on its walls. So we're opening the process up. Together with BS + Beer (Building Science + Beer) and the Midcoast Climate, Energy & Green Building group, we'll gather CMCA staff, local decarbonization experts, and the climate-curious to talk about what's actually possible.
CMCA Interim Director and Curator Grant Wahlquist will bring a view from the art world itself - from the artists who confront climate reality in their work, and the uncomfortable footprint of museums as institutions. Exhibitions are temporary by nature, which means constant shipping, building, and tearing down. It's worth asking what that costs, and what could be done differently.
We'll dig into questions like:
- What can CMCA realistically do to cut the building's carbon footprint?
- How can the building systems - heat pumps, insulation, solar - become something visitors learn from, rather than something hidden?
- What is the role of a trusted cultural institution in helping a community understand climate change and imagine its way forward?
Then we'll keep the conversation going over drinks and snacks with friends and colleagues.
Everyone welcome. Expertise optional.
