Who should come?

  • Aimed at UAL students/graduates who meet the Creative Shift criteria (scroll below)
  • Students & Graduates interested in working as a freelance creative
  • Particularly useful for final year students interested in the next steps of their career

Creative Shift criteria

Creative Shift acknowledges the barriers that exist for students from underrepresented backgrounds in Higher Education and in the creative industries.

In line with UAL's Access and Participation Plan, this programme is aimed at those who meet both of these criteria:

I am currently a Home (UK) student studying on an undergraduate degree course at UAL

AND

one or more of the following statements apply to you:

  • I am Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (B.A.M.E.)* student
  • I took part in the UAL Insights programme
  • I recieve the UAL Bursary.
  • I am a Care Leaver (I have been in the Care system)
  • I have a disability according to the Equality Act 2010
  • My parent(s)/ guardian(s) have not completed a University Degree
  • I have caring responsibilities (i.e I am a parent, or am the primary care giver for a child/children, disabled person/s or elderly family member for example)

*We acknowledge that the term Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) is contested. Whilst there is no consensus view on alternative terminology, we welcome ideas and feedback on this debate.

Travel Bursaries

**To enable participation for students from underrepresented groups (who this programme is aimed at), we have a limited amount of funding that we can provide as bursaries. This can go towards covering the cost of travel, childcare or anything else that could help to support you if you would otherwise be unable to attend.

Please get in touch with us to enquire about this, by emailing the programme lead: Davinia at [email protected] with ‘Visit to Isabelle's Studio’ as the subject title, and let us know you if you need a travel bursary. Please note what you say is confidential, and there is no need to feel embarrassed – practice advocating for your needs, and we will do our best to help where possible.

Please note travel bursaries can only be provided to current UAL students and will likely have to be paid retrospectively. (If this would be a problem, mention this when you get in touch).

Positionality (privilege & power): if you’re in a dominant identity please consider how you are making space for others in the space, and if you are in a marginalised identity consider practicing taking up space with us!
