The Road to Oxford: Journeys, Music, and Belonging
About this Event

As part of the Creative Pathways programme accompanying the exhibition George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus, we are delighted to host a special public Q&A with Marios Papadopoulos, Cypriot conductor, educator, and Founder & Music Director of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.

This evening invites audiences to explore the idea of artistic journey how a life in music is shaped through movement, transition, and encounter. From early musical experiences and leaving home, to international horizons, decisive turning points from piano to podium, and ultimately the road to Oxford, the conversation reflects on the paths that form an artist’s voice and sense of responsibility.

Echoing the spirit of the journey to Ithaca in the work of Constantine P. Cavafy, the focus is not solely on arrival, but on what is gathered along the way: discipline, doubt, conviction, and vision. Dr Papadopoulos will speak about building an orchestra from an idea, about leadership in music, and about the role of culture in shaping communities and young people.

The discussion will also touch on music beyond the concert hall education, access, and social engagement highlighting the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s long-standing work with schools, young musicians, and communities, and its belief in music as a living, human force.

Rooted in his enduring bond with Cyprus, the conversation opens a space to reflect on identity, diaspora, and how cultural memory travels with us. The evening will conclude with an open Q&A, inviting the audience to take part in a shared reflection on creativity, journey, and belonging.
