Jewellery has the power to tell stories, capture memories, and reflect the beauty of the world around us. For Fife-based jewellery designers Sally Grant and Grace Girvan, it’s also a way of making creative connections – with the landscape, with their community, and with other artists.
Sally and Grace are both established jewellers who have built their creative practice in Fife, working together for almost two decades. Earlier this year, they made an exciting move from their long-time base at The Platform Studios in Burntisland to a new studio and shop space on the town’s busy High Street. This new chapter is about more than just a change of address. It’s about deepening their roots within the local community, creating a space that welcomes visitors, and offering a platform to showcase their own jewellery alongside the work of other makers.
At the heart of their journey is friendship. Sally and Grace first met nearly 20 years ago while working at Coburg House Studios in Edinburgh. It was there, surrounded by a group of independent jewellers at the very start of their careers, that they discovered the value of support and shared experience. Navigating the creative industries is rarely straightforward, and the encouragement they found within that community of makers has stayed with them ever since. What began as a professional connection grew into a strong friendship, and today it continues to shape the way they work.
When they later moved to The Platform in Burntisland, they carried that spirit of collaboration with them. For 12 years, their workshop in the converted railway station was a hub of creativity, where they and fellow artists could share ideas, swap advice, and build lasting relationships. Those creative connections helped sustain their practice, reminding them that making jewellery is not a solitary act but part of a wider conversation with others.
Their new space on Burntisland High Street reflects those same values. As well as providing a fresh workshop for their own designs, it’s a place where they can welcome visitors, host events, and promote the work of other creatives. The move is a chance to invite the community directly into their world of jewellery – to see the tools, the materials, and the craft that goes into every piece. It’s also a way of bringing people together, creating opportunities for conversations and collaborations that will continue to grow.
About Sally & Grace
Both Sally and Grace draw inspiration from the natural world, though in different ways. Grace grew up in Orkney, and her jewellery often reflects the rugged coastline and unique atmosphere of the islands. Through her designs, she captures something of the textures, colours, and rhythms of the landscape she knows so well. Sally, meanwhile, grew up in Fife, where her love of exploring wild places has shaped her work. She collects and photographs natural patterns and textures, reinterpreting them through jewellery that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to the environment.
For both artists, working with their hands is central to their practice. Making isn’t just about producing objects – it’s about process, intuition, and the satisfaction of shaping raw materials into something meaningful. Every piece of jewellery tells its own story.
This Creative Conversation is an opportunity to hear Sally and Grace reflect on their journeys so far, and to discover how jewellery and creative connections have shaped their lives. From their early days in Edinburgh to building a creative hub in Fife, to opening the doors of their new High Street space, theirs is a story of collaboration, resilience, and friendship.
Whether you’re a maker yourself, a jewellery lover, or simply curious about the creative process, join us for an evening that celebrates the importance of connection – to place, to people, and to the things we make with our hands.
