The Secret Lives of Color traces the surprising histories of 75 shades, dyes, and hues — from Picasso's blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux, from the white that protected against the plague to the imperial purple that only emperors could wear. Cultural historian Kassia St. Clair approaches each color not as an aesthetic choice but as a biography — a living archive shaped by colonization, chemistry, art, and everyday life.
