Reflect on and engage with creative re-use and reanimation of activist archives in public collections in this interactive skills workshop.
About this Event

Organised in collaboration with the National Library of Scotland (NLS) and NLS Artist-in-Residence Becky Šik, Creative Citizenship in the Archives: Methods for Engaging with Activist Histories is led by PhD students Cicely Farrer (University of St Andrews) and Alison Scott (Gray’s School of Art), and will provide an opportunity for PhD researchers to reflect on and engage with the creative re-use and reanimation of activist archives in public collections.

Inspired by Šik’s recent artist residency commission with the NLS Sound Archive, the day will include a workshop for participants to develop skills associated with archival research, and explore pathways for public engagement, creative methods and collaboration with researchers across the arts and humanities. Together we will explore creative methods for locating and working with art, archives and activists. Addressing the practical, conceptual and ethical frameworks for working with archives of activism in the 20th and 21st century, we approach archives as messy, inspiring, optimistic and contradictory spaces, which enable us to think about questions including public engagement and belonging.

There will also be time to explore the collection at the NLS’s Moving Image and Sound Archive, which captures over 100 years of Scotland's history.

FULL TIMETABLE AND DETAILS TO FOLLOW.
