About this Event

Book: Part I & Part II (Chapters 1 – 5) of E. H. Gombrich’s “Art and Illusion: A Study in the Psychology of Pictorial Representation”

“Art and Illusion: A Study in the Psychology of Pictorial Representation” is a famous 1960 book by art historian Ernst Gombrich. It explores why art changes over time and how pictures create the illusion of reality. Gombrich uses psychology and science to show that artists do not just copy nature. They use a system of making and matching rules to trick the eye.

We’ll be discussing the first five chapters:

PART ONE: THE LIMITS OF LIKENESS

I. From Light into Paint

II. Truth and the Stereotype

PART TWO: FUNCTION AND FORM

III. Pygmalion’s Power

IV. Reflections on the Greek Revolution

V. Formula and Experience

The Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is drop-in, free, and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people.
