Creating the sustainable garden

In this session you will learn what sustainability means when it comes to your garden, from the balance between hard/soft landscape, the choice of plants and where to grow them, and how the garden can be more biodiverse. You will also learn how to make informed choices when it comes to buying materials, tools or accessories, regardless of what is written on the label.

We will also cover simple maintenance adjustments to make your garden more sustainable, without needing to do more work.

The workshop will be delivered at Hillside Garden by our gardens manager, Ana Oliveira. There will be a mixture of theory and practical demonstrations in our polytunnel and amenity areas. The session will have moments for discussion and brainstorming. Due to space restrictions, it will be limited to 10 participants.

There will be a break halfway through the session and refreshments will be provided.

A digital certificate of attendance will be issued for anyone interested.

Hillside Garden is fully wheelchair accessible, and we have an accessible Portaloo on site. The polytunnel will provide shelter from the elements but won’t be heated. In hot conditions, the session will be entirely delivered in the garden.

Bring clothes and footwear to remain comfortable outdoors.

Ana is the garden manager at Green Synergy and her professional experience includes botanical horticulture, garden management and garden design. Ana has a degree in Landscape Architecture and completed the Kew Diploma in Horticulture at Kew Gardens.

Sustainability and climate resilience are at the heart Green Synergy’s work and Hillside Garden is a real-world example of how that can be achieved. From growing plants using minimal water, making our own compost and fertilizers, collecting and processing our own seeds or improving biodiversity with a mixture of species selection and cultural practices.
