About this Event

Creating Quality Responses to Challenging Behavior: What to Do When a Child Hits, Throws, or Melts Down

Challenging behavior is the part of the day that wears teachers down. A child hits, throws, refuses, or melts down, and you have to respond right away, in front of the other children, with no time to think. This training gives you a calm, step-by-step way to respond that teaches the child what to do.

You will learn how to read what the behavior is telling you, what to say and do in the moment, how to help the child get back to learning, and how to change the room and the routine so the same behavior happens less next week. You will practice with classroom scenarios and leave with a plan for one behavior you face now, ready to use on Monday.

Who it's for: Child care teachers and directors working with toddlers through pre-K. Directors are welcome; the session ties each step to the Texas Minimum Standards for discipline and guidance, so you can use it to coach your staff and review your center's guidance policy.

What you get: 3 clock hours, instructor-led, in the guidance and discipline area. A certificate of completion. Free children's books for your classroom. Coffee and breakfast snacks.

When: Saturday, December 12, 2026, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Doors open at 8:45 AM.

Where: Alvin College, Café E in the Student Center (Building E), 3110 Mustang Rd, Alvin, TX. Park in Lot E.

Cost: $20 per person. Limited to 50 participants. Group from one center? Email [email protected].

Your certificate: You need a free TECPDS account to receive your clock hours. Create one at www.TECPDS.org before the training.
