Creating Legislative Theatre
About this Event
This is a two-day workshop which will be an introduction to Legislative Theatre. Over the two-days participants will devise their own Legislative Theatre performance and will consider the following questions:
- How do you devise a Legislative Theatre play?
- What should be included in a Legislative Theatre event?
- How does the Joker (facilitator) run the event?
- How do you enable an audience to be involved in the creation, deliberation and voting on new policy?
Timings - 10am-5pm both days
Legislative Theatre
Legislative theatre was developed in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in the 1990s by Brazilian theatre director Augusto Boal. It is part of the Theatre of the Oppressed. A development of Forum Theatre, it actively involves the audience is creating and voting on new policies or laws to help overcome oppression.

Gavin Crichton
Gavin is the Artistic Director of Active Inquiry. He first began working with Legislative Theatre in 2014 and in 2017 was part of LegiLAB, a European Legislative Theatre exchange project. Since 2020 he has led Active Inquiry's Drama for Democracy project exploring how Legislative Theatre can be used effectively in 21st Century Scotland.
