Learn to turn ideas, numbers and data into graphic stories - the Information is Beautiful way
About this Event

LEARN DATA VISUALIZATION

How do you create effective, interesting, impactful and, above all, useful data-visualisations, charts and infographics?

What principles and practices give the best results?

How do you combine visual thinking, statistical rigour & organisational goals without compromise?
Use a concept-driven approach!

In this rare intimate workshop for just 30 guests, held in the heart of San Francisco city, David McCandless, best-selling author and founder of Information is Beautiful, shares his concept-driven process and method for creating successful impactful visualizations which go "beyond the bar chart"

We can offer group discount for teams and organisation of 6 or more. Contact us for more details.

_________

Our approach to creating graphics inverts the common practice of starting with data. Instead it focuses on developing a distinct, useful, smart question or concept to frame and ask of the data and information.

This way of working yields different and often more impactful 'human-centric' rather than 'data-centric' visualisations - leading to more beautiful, memorable, impactful results.

It also helps with the critiquing and ‘debugging’ of charts, and is tool-agnostic, works alongside AI tools, and is useful for many outputs: presentations, interactives, data-stories, apps, marketing materials etc.

In this fun intensive, attendees will directly learn?

» concepting and the generation of solid, interesting ideas ripe for visualization

» creating, selecting and executing appropriate and effective charts and visualisations

» designing and beautifying charts and diagrams

» essential principles of data-storytelling

Be broadly introduced to:

» how to use dataviz as a new lens for communication of ideas and stories

» the many methods and approaches for visualising data

» a playful creative approach to data, based on exploration and discovery, for better results

» working AI and LLMs into a data-visualisatio workflow

What’s the style of the workshop?

Expect a fun, informative experience that is interactive and hands-on: pens, paper, sketching, sharing etc. All with a solid underpinning of theory and best practice.

This workshop would be useful for:

» Translating written reports, research & messaging into visual graphics
» Understanding data journalism and story-telling with data
» Words and ideas people looking to translate concepts into design language
» Visual / design thinkers wanting to expand approaches to include data
» Data / code practitioners looking to improve aesthetics & conceptual prowess

What will I come away with?

Everyone leaves with their own datavizzes created on the day, a unique limited-edition handout pamphlet, and a slide deck. David will also sign copies of his books and pose awkwardly on the end of selfie-sticks.
