Edo Tegaki Chōchin (hand-painted paper lanterns) first became popular in the 17th century and continue to lighten the dark and create an intimate or festive atmosphere today. Edo Tegaki Chōchin are made of bamboo ribbing covered with washi (lit. ‘Japanese paper’). Decorated with family crests (kamon) and characters written in a distinctive lettering style, they are usually seen at shrines, temples, and festivals, but are also used by restaurants and izakaya bars to attract customers and provide an element of interior design. The Murata family continues the tradition of lantern painting from the tiny Namidabashi Oshimaya shop, tucked in a small alley in the eastern part of Tokyo.
During the workshop, you can make your own lantern by painting a Japanese-language character (kanji) within an outline previously drawn by Murata Kenichirō specially for this workshop. You can then take your creation home on the same day. A selection of designs will be available for you to choose from on a first-come, first-served basis.
Edo Tegaki Chōchin are one of the 42 ‘Traditional Crafts of Tokyo’ designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
These expertly led workshops are available free of charge. Please cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend the event you booked in for so that someone else can participate.
Bookings open on 12 November 2024 at 10:00.
