Exploring craft as a form of resistance, dialogue and collaboration
About this Event

Teachers and educators are invited to join a student-led workshop developed through the Crafting Resistance After School Club, formed at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. The session includes creative activities exploring protest and resistance through craft, offering insight into a collaborative model that foregrounds student agency and dialogue, alongside a pop-up display of work developed by the group.
The club forms part of Aasha John’s Visible Practice Residency with Autograph. Aasha is Head of Art at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School and the residency has supported her to develop a new body of work within and beyond the school environment. The themes of the club have grown directly from her making process, translating this enquiry into the classroom and testing approaches that centre representation and critical conversation through craft.
Since November, students have worked with weaving, clay, cyanotype, painting, photography and intergenerational craft traditions, shaping the programme through shared experience and collective making. Following the student-led activities, educators are invited to reflect on how similar approaches might be adapted within their own contexts, including shifting classroom dynamics and the role that publicly presenting student work can play in building confidence and identity.

Please note: This session is part of our teachers’ programme, and specifically aimed at primary and secondary school teachers.

Programmed in partnership with The Photographers’ Gallery as part of Autograph's Visible Practice Residency project.

Led by

Aasha John (born 1989, Trinidad ) is a London-based visual artist whose practice is rooted in storytelling and community. Exploring her relationship with places, often through collaborative or participatory practices, John invites the viewer to physically engage with her artwork and share her experiences, in turn contributing to the artwork themselves, often through printmaking or bookmarking.

She is interested in the artist's role as investigator and interpreter; probing their subject and conveying meaning in a way that engages the viewer and invites them to consider their relationship with the subject matter. John studied Graphic Communication at University for the Creative Arts. She is Head of Art/Technology Faculty and Head of Art at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington.
