About this Event
This is an open invitation to attend ‘Crafting Collaboration: Care-centred approaches to social research’. This series of two workshops, facilitated by GENDER:ED Postdoctoral Scholar Dr Helen Shutt, will bring together scholars with an interest in community and creative research methods to reflect upon how we can craft inclusive inter-personal relationships in our research.
These workshops are open to all but may be of particular interest to researchers that:
- Employ participatory and/or arts-based research methods
- Conduct fieldwork in the Global South
- Work across multinational and/or interdisciplinary teams
- Address sensitive, traumatic subject matters
Part One: Coming Together, Wednesday 3rd June 11-1 pm, followed by Lunch 1-2 pm- 3.52 | Hybrid teaching space (Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI))
This two-hour session will be an opportunity to learn about one another’s research.
We will discuss some of the benefits of using participatory and community research methods, and also some of the challenges that we have encountered. This will be a facilitated discussion based around prompts on the themes of care, creativity, and relationships.
We will have the opportunity to continue the conversation more informally over lunch, which will be provided from 1-2 pm.
Part Two: Creative Responses, Wednesday 10th June 11-1 pm, Followed by Lunch 1-2 pm 2.20 | Hybrid teaching space (Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI))
This practical session will be designed in response to the discussion points raised in Part One. I will offer activities and strategies that can be employed to address some of the challenges discussed in the previous session. I will offer examples of exercises and approaches I have found generative in my own research and open up space for reflection on how these might be adapted for different participant groups and social contexts.
Once again, lunch will be provided following the session.
In addition to offering some practical techniques that you can take away and adapt for your own research, these workshops will also facilitate connections between researchers, which I hope will continue beyond the sessions themselves.
To allow everyone who attends to engage fully in the activities, places will be limited. While it would be ideal for participants to attend both sessions, it is possible to just attend one. Please indicate if that is your intention when you sign up. Please register for a place via Eventbrite. If you have any questions or would like further information, please email me at [email protected]. You can read more about my work here.
