Critical Realism in Practice: Insights for Education and Social Science Researchers – Fill in form
Context:
The philosophical framework of critical realism has gained increasing attention among researchers in education and the social sciences for its ability to bridge the gap between theory and empirical investigation. It provides a nuanced lens for examining complex social phenomena, acknowledging the underlying structures and mechanisms that shape observable outcomes.
Despite its growing influence, many researchers encounter challenges in translating critical realist principles into practical research strategies, study designs, and data analysis. There is a clear need for accessible pathways to or guidance on how these concepts can be effectively applied in real-world research contexts.
This hybrid event, “Critical Realism in Practice: Insights for Education and Social Science Researchers,” organised by the Critical Realism Study Group at Moray House School of Education and Sport, The University of Edinburgh, aims to address this need. It will provide students and colleagues with insights into the methodologies, conceptual frameworks, and practical considerations central to conducting critical realist research.
The event is relevant for academics, Master’s and doctoral students, and research practitioners seeking to enhance the rigor and depth of their work. It will also foster collaborative dialogue around methodological challenges and innovations in education and the social sciences. Attendees with little or no prior exposure to critical realism are also welcome.
