Hedge laying improver day to practice your skills. Please note, this is not a taught course and requires a basic level of understanding.
About this Event

Hedge laying is an ancient craft, yet essential to modern day hedgerow maintenance.

We have lost half of all our hedgerows in the last 70 years, over 500,000km of hedgerow (enough to go beyond the moon)! Now, of those we have left half are in unfavourable condition, due to lack of or poor management.

Practice and improve your hedge laying skills on this Hedge Laying Improver Day, so you can help get UK hedges back into good health. With these skills you can have a go on your own hedge or encourage someone local to you to adapt their management - together we can revive UK hedgerows!

...

1-day: Please note, this is not a taught course and requires a basic understanding/ ability to hedge lay. Staff will be on hand to guide you and help, but there will not be a formal taught element. This day is aimed at people who have completed a hedge laying course and want to practice their new skills.

Time: 10am - 4pm

Please bring:

· Packed lunch and water

· Baseball caps to protect heads from thorns

· Long sleeve and sturdy trousers

· PPE - leather gardening gloves and goggles (we have a selection if you don't own any)

If you have your own tools then I would encourage you to bring them as we may be a little tight (loppers, folding saws, billhooks, axe). There will be a selection of tools provided, also.

Location: Cox Croft Farm, Compton SO21 2AT

With 72% of the UK as farmland, hedgerows are the lifeline to so much of our native wildlife, making do in this agriculturally dominated landscape. Hedgerows are also incredibly important for people, farmers, climate change and the environment. The Hampshire Hedge Project

This event is part of the wider Hampshire Hedge project, connecting up the New Forest and the South Downs National Parks with green corridor of hedgerows and wild spaces. Over a 3-year period (starting Autumn 2023) CPRE Hampshire will restore a network of 12 – 14 miles of hedgerows working with local communities, schools, landowners and farmers to manage existing hedgerows and plant new ones, connecting copses and meadows along the way.

Volunteering - Hedge planting action days

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please follow this link for more information about how you can help on this project: www.cprehampshire.org.uk/get-involved/volunteering/cpre-hampshire-hedge-volunteer/

We will be running weekly action days every Thursday and one weekend day a month from November - March. We welcome any help, whether it be joining for a few hours, just one time or every week!
