By day, it is a bustling community hub—but by night, the atmosphere completely shifts. Built on the former site of traditional pit cottages before being rebuilt as the Social and Literary Institute in the 1930s, Coxhoe Village Hall holds decades of deep-rooted local history, and some past residents seem completely unwilling to leave. Those who look after the building know its dark side all too well. Staff and visitors frequently report an intense, uneasy feeling of being watched, with several employees flatly refusing to be left alone in the building at night. From poltergeist activity and phantom hands touching unsuspecting guests, to the eerie sound of phantom dancers echoing across the main hall from its old dance-hall days, a heavy, shadow-dwelling presence is known to lurk near the stage.
