New this fall, Lucas SWCD is hosting a series of classes aimed at providing information to help you improve your soil in the garden or on your farm! All classes are free to attend and will be held at our office in Toledo, Ohio. On October 7th, during Ohio Stormwater Awareness Week, we will welcome Michael Watercutter from American Farmland Trust as our guest speaker. During this class, he will speak to the benefits of cover crops and their connection to soil health and water quality.
Michael joined American Farmland Trust in April of 2022. Michael is in partnership with Mercer Landmark, a farmer-owned Co-op in northwest Ohio. His main role is to help farmers with cover crops and funding opportunities for conservation practices. Before AFT, Michael worked for Mercer County Soil & Water District as a conservation tech and office administrator. He also worked as a research agronomist studying cover crops and soil health. Michael has a degree in agronomy from Ohio State University. He grew up on a small dairy farm in west central Ohio that was started by his great-grandfather in 1895. He and his dad currently raise steers and grow corn, soybeans, and wheat.
