Dr. Keil currently serves as a clinical professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has published extensively on the topic of implementing diagnostic imaging into PT practice. He has presented at national conferences about direct access and diagnostic imaging and has provided insight and guidance to several institutions across the country who are interested in implementing direct access. He has functioned as a first-contact provider at both Georgetown University Hospital in Washington
D.C. and the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he oversaw the outpatient rehabilitation department. Dr. Keil currently directs the Orthopedic Residency and Faculty Practice at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Course Objectives:
• Describe the responsibilities PTs have in functioning as first-contact providers.
• Implement medical screening procedures to appropriately identify conditions that may fall outside the PTs scope of practice.
• Implement evidence-based guidelines related to ordering appropriate diagnostic imaging studies.
• Demonstrate appropriate use of the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria and other published guidelines when referring for imaging.
• Differentiate between the role of plain film x-rays vs advanced imaging (MRI, CT scan, etc.)
Credits:
This course is approved for 7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for physical therapists & physical therapy assistants in Oregon.
