Why Attend the Couples Summit? Who Attends These Events? What’s the Purpose?
Two friends once shared their husbands’ perspectives on the couple's summit events. One
husband joked, “Why go to the summit and wreck the good thing we’ve got going?” Another
remarked that a good marriage is simply about exercising common sense, implying that
everyone knows how they should treat their spouse—they just need to follow through.
Over my years of involvement in various marriage events, I’ve encountered multiple attitudes
toward couples’ summits. These attitudes span a continuum from, “Only people with marriages
in serious trouble go to the couple's summit,” to, “Only people in strong marriages are confident
enough to show up at one!”
Who Attends Couples Summits?
Research shows that both “distressed” and “non-distressed” couples attend couples’ summits
(Doss, Rhoades, Stanley, & Markman, 2009). These events draw participants from all age
groups and every stage of marriage.
● Engaged couples often attend as part of their marriage preparation.
● Newlyweds in their first year of marriage may come to navigate the often-tumultuous
early stages.
● Couples around the seven-year mark often find value in receiving additional input to
strengthen their relationship.
● Veteran couples, who have been married for decades, also attend to maintain and
enhance their bond.
● Second marriages are frequently represented, as participants seek to build stronger
foundations for their new relationships.
The reasons for attending are as diverse as the marriages themselves.
What’s the Purpose of Attending?
Couples attend summits for a variety of reasons:
● Marriage “tune-ups”: Some couples use these events intermittently to refresh their
relationship.
● Last-ditch efforts: Others attend as a final attempt to save their marriage.
While common sense is essential in building a good marriage, maintaining one also requires
effort, attention, and intention. Strong marriages don’t happen by accident. Often, we know what
we should do but need encouragement and practical tools to follow through.
At any stage or for any reason, a marriage can benefit from support and sustenance. Spending
a day at a couples’ summit offers time to focus on the relationship, rediscover each other, and
engage in deeper conversations. It provides opportunities to discuss what makes a good
marriage while offering practical strategies and ideas to improve it.
Key Areas of Discussion
● Common Life Stages in Marriage:
● The First Years: Newlyweds and the honeymoon stage
● The Middle Years: Post-honeymoon adjustments and parenthood
● The Later Years: Empty nesters and retirees
A Symbol of Commitment
The very act of attending a couples’ summit demonstrates a commitment to prioritizing your
marriage. Whether you are newlyweds or seasoned partners, attending such an event reflects
your dedication to learning, growing, and strengthening your bond. At any stage, it’s simply good
common sense to invest in your relationship.
