About this Event
Welcome to Countering Narratives - The Future of Local Journalism in West Virginia! Join us for an insightful discussion on the state of local journalism in the region. The brunch meeting will be held at The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, where we will explore the challenges and opportunities facing journalism in West Virginia. Don't miss this chance to engage with industry experts and contribute to the conversation about the future of news in our community. This event is in partnership with News Futures, Black By God WV, The Real WV and The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation.
The American multidisciplinary artist Alexandra Bell has been tapped as the keynote speaker for the journalism brunch. Bell is best known for her series, "Counternarratives," large scale paste-ups of New York Times articles that examine how media frameworks impact the perception of Black people, often highlighting biases in mainstream news. Her art underscores the need for media literacy and authentic Black narratives to promote equitable representation. Alexandra’s lectures expand views to change the layout of journalism, emphasize the importance of images and the way we view text in journalism.
This meeting is dedicated to addressing the critical role of journalism in safeguarding democracy in West Virginia. Focusing on the challenges faced by local news sources, media ownership dynamics, and journalistic integrity, this meeting aims to reimagine and support local journalism as an essential community resource.
