How do you follow up from last month's amazing line-up and headliner Hayley Ellis? Well, we're delighted to welcome back to the The Back Room after several years away another outstanding headliner at CCC, the brilliant Tony Burgess.
A usual we will have an array of great supporting acts and Dough Punks are back again for their regular slice of the action, serving up tasty pizzas from 6:30pm before the show starts at 8pm.
Get your tickets here or read on for more details https://see.tickets/ccctonyburgess
You may recognise Tony Burgess from his role in the cult BBC3 comedy Ideal where he played DJ Troy, Moz’s crazy, vinyl obsessed brother; you may have seen his self-penned BBC1 sitcom The Visit, or maybe you’ve caught him doing stand up where he’s played most established venues throughout the country. Tony was the winner of the prestigious City Life Comedian of the Year, came runner up in So You Think You’re Funny and was nominated for best stand up and writer at the North West comedy awards. He was also a founder member of the topical MEN at work team at the Comedy Store in Manchester, regular compere of the long-established Frog and Bucket Comedy club and has supported household names like Johnny Vegas on National Theatre tours. Tony is also a successful writer, his plays, Fire Salad and Doorway, premiered at The Royal Exchange Studio Theatre in Manchester. He wrote on the first two series of cult BBC 3 sitcom Ideal, co-wrote a Sony Award winning Radio 4 comedy, The Nightclass, with Johnny Vegas “first rate acting….great characterisation and clever writing….”, and penned his own seven-part BBC sitcom The Visit, which played to much acclaim on both BBC3 and BBC1. Tony has also written for many big name comedians including Steve Coogan (Paul and Pauline Calf’s Cheese and Ham Sandwich), Johnny Vegas (the Sony award winning radio comedy Nightclass and Who’s Ready For Ice Cream) Lily Savage and John Bishop (John Bishop’s Britain). Tony even managed to get a writing credit on Wallace and Gromit’s The Curse of the Were Rabbit, so his kids now believe that he’s got a proper job.
“Deceptively intelligent and incredibly funny” BBC
“Wish he could have talked all night: side-splitting stuff!” Metro
“…great, well-crafted gags” The Times
“A demon set and staggering stage presence…” The Big Issue
“…finds the comic and absurd in difficult situations…” The Guardian
“…The tone is warm enough so the comedy never seems bleak…”. The Sunday Times
“While making people laugh sometimes uncomfortably, the play is strong enough to chisel and nag at the conscience reminding it’s audience about people they ignore…” The Times
“Around the simple premise, writer Tony Burgess sets up a series of blink and you’ll miss ‘em one liners, managing to draw soap sized story arcs for his characters with deceptive ease…” The Times on The Visit
Plus three support acts, including Stuart Thomas ("A big fat star in the making" - Sofie Hagen), rising star Kash Kureshi and surreal whirlwind and Hull Comedian of the Year finalist Ethan Formstone ("Inventive, questing and very, very funny" - Silky). It's all held together as usual by your regular hosts Fresh Prince Of Hull Fair Jed Salisbury returning from his stint running the Hull Comedy Festival and Stone Cold Rich Austin.
Doors open 6:30pm for the pizzas, show starts at 8pm (or whenever we can be arsed). Tickets £12 in advance or £14 on the door (£10 with NUS / NHS card).
TICKETS ON SALE NOW from https://see.tickets/ccctonyburgess
Tickets available to collect from the venue itself on the night: The Back Room, 175a Hallgate, Cottingham HU16 4BB (please message us on FB or send an email to [email protected] to reserve tickets to purchase on the night at the advance rate).
We've sold out (or very nearly) the last few months so please make sure you're booking/reserving in advance. If you're coming in groups of four or more it's helpful if you can book together or let us know your total group size so that we can allocate seating.
Cottingham Comedy Club, winner of Yorkshire's Best Independent Comedy Club 2023 and 2024 and the village’s only comedy venue, provides an unique comedy experience in many ways. This intimate club gets you up close and personal with the acts, many of whom are breaking through into TV, or are established acts from the UK and international comedy circuit. The Back Room is a welcoming venue and we have a dedicated room for the comedy, with regular breaks between the acts for you to lubricate your throats with laughter juice. With four acts and a compere it’s great value for money at less than £2.50 per comedian. We think it’s the most fun you can have with friends on a midweek night out.
