Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University | South Brisbane, QL
Join us for a mini-festival featuring some of Meanjin's finest improvising musicians as they explore original compositions and other interpretations.
COSMOS ENSEMBLE: 1PM
Led by pianist and composer Peyo Pappadopoulos, Cosmos Ensemble explores the many dimensions of improvised music. Cosmos Ensemble aims to continue building on the sounds of modal improvisation within the 70s, exploring fusion experimentations and ambient soundscapes. Their music encompasses intense tones of the avant-garde to the smooth modal grooves found within spiritual jazz. The group's explorations aim to push the boundaries of improvised music.
KANSHA ENSEMBLE: 2PM
Led by bassist/composer/improviser Connor Perkins, Kansha Ensemble is formed on the notion of community, connection and experimentation. In this performance, the group will explore original compositions by Perkins that push and deconstruct the notions of compositional frameworks in improvised music.
MAX IRVIN: 3PM
Max Irvin has spent the past year exploring rhythm, time, and phrasing on the saxophone. Inspired by Joe Lovano, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Chris Potter, his music explores how rhythmic fluidity shapes connection, pulse, and group interplay across varying ensemble settings.
Location: Basil Jones Orchestra Hall, Queensland Conservatorium
Time: music from 1pm, entry permitted at any time and you don’t have to stay for all 3 groups
