—— From London’s underground to Detroit’s legendary influence, this is house music history in motion. ——We’re proud to welcome Chris Simmonds to Housewerk — a true pioneer whose sound has been shaping dancefloors since the late 80s.
Also known through a long list of respected aliases and projects including Kidsmart, House Proud People, Smooth & Simmonds, Deluxe & Simmonds, Retro Emotion, Private Funk, Bakers Dozen, The Push Button Orchestra, The Chris Simmonds Project and Urban Influence, Chris has remained a favourite amongst the underground house music scene for decades.
London-born DJ, producer and percussionist, Chris comes from a deeply musical family background dating back to 1977.
He first hosted weekly shows on Time Radio, Girls FM and later Medina Radio, where he met production partner Jack Smooth and formed Wax Factory Productions as Smooth & Simmonds. Together they independently composed, produced, pressed and distributed their own records — becoming one of the first labels to do so back in 1989.
A pivotal trip to Detroit in 1993, inspired by Mike Huckaby, helped shape the sound that would become Chris’s signature. Through this journey he connected with Ritchie Hawtin and Jon Aquaviva of Definitive Records, leading to the birth of The Chris Simmonds Project with Mike Huckaby.
Shortly after, Cross Section Music was established by Lorraine Kempster, later Chris’s wife. The label has built a respected legacy, with releases dating back to 1996 still championed on dancefloors today.
Across the years, Cross Section has featured artists such as Mike Huckaby, Tim Deluxe, DJ Sneak, Todd Terry, Demuir, Jason Hodges and Magoo.
Chris has also remixed for labels including BMG, Ministry of Sound, Inhouse Records, Fourth & Broadway, Robsoul, Music For Freaks, Houseguest, Magnetic Recordings and Planet E, with his remix of DJ Assassin – Face In The Crowd shortlisted by Mixmag as one of the best dance tracks of all time.
As a DJ, Chris has played events across the globe, compiled and mixed celebrated releases including Latin House Volumes 3–8, The Funk Room and The Cross Section Collective, while continuing to champion the latest in house music through his own online stream.
Expect deep grooves, jackin’ rhythms and timeless underground house energy all night long.
