With CORTEX, Frédéric Touchard explores thought through the image, both in its still and moving forms. The exhibition unfolds as an exploration of a mental landscape, where thought extends and takes shape within a territory to be traversed. Photographs, videos, sounds and silences form an open ensemble in which visitors are invited to trace their own path.

As the artist puts it, his intention is to “explore our contemporary consciousness and its symbolism”, questioning the effects of modernity on our representations and our imagination.

In CORTEX, the image of thought is not conceived as a fixed representation, but as something unstable, fleeting, and potentially dreamlike. It can emerge through sudden or moving images, but also circulate lightly through associations, shifts and detours. It unfolds between bodies and landscapes, in a back-and-forth between inner space and the outside world.

Born in 1961, Frédéric Touchard is a French filmmaker, photographer and writer. He has directed nearly thirty documentaries and web documentaries for French television, including several of his early films devoted to fado. His photographic and video work has been presented in France and Portugal. He is also the author of three novels, including Lisbonne, Andante, published in 2023.
