Cornwall Folk Festival is back for the 53rd time in high energy mode with an energetic Nos Lowen from Skillywidden, the band that started the Nos Lowen craze, starting the five nights and four days of non-stop music in Wadebridge.
Five evening concerts – the Friday frontier showcasing three young, Cornish boundary-pushing acts with the techno-folk of Martha Woods, the fresh, ethereal, eco-conscious sound of Wake The River, plus heart-tugging performances from Somerset’s St Fian.
Festival Saturday is a Celtic medley with the fast and infectious perfect Bluegrass of Penzance’s Flats and Sharps, and a fusion of tradition synth‑pop and Eurofolk from Isle of Man’s Elizabeth Davidson‑Blythe and Daniel Quayle.
And Sunday is legend night as they bring multi-award-winning singer-songwriter and Show of Hands frontman Steve Knightley’s new energetic project The Winter Yards Band, joined by Cornwall’s own Alt-Country/Americana cousins True Foxes.
There is also two concerts in the town’s Betjeman Centre, on Friday with the sheer musicality and burst of colour from Gavin Fairhall Lever, who weave together the joyful tumble of Celtic tunes, the warmth of song, the rhythmic spark of jazz and the expressive nuance of chamber music.
And Sunday sees the return of Devon's Detta Kenzie, who blends Celtic‑tinted indie‑folk with a modern, cinematic edge, joined by her new creative partner: award‑winning songwriter and guitarist Chris Cleverley.
And for a Friday afternoon that will have you in stiches, don’t miss the brain-tickling, word-mangling word play, satire, parody and audience participation from humourist and poet Rob Barratt.
The three-day outdoor FAR Stage has 28 Cornish and southwest acts including strong trad-based sets from Alex Lord and Wyrd Kin, close harmony from Hireth, gorgeous solo vocals from Tilly Jones and Jenny Bishop, poppy alt-folk from House Cat Frankie, young talent with Padstow’s Karenza Lily-May, Liam Kinsley and Joe Chown, Cornish male and female vocal groups and ending each day with rowdy sets from the likes of Annown, Liam Jordan, The Stone Ryders, Whippletree and Du Glas. This wide variety of music is yours for a ridiculously modest £10 or less per day and £20 for family groups.
Plus plenty of free music and dance in town centre locations, lively sessions in several pubs across the long weekend, and morning music workshops.
