Join us Saturday, January 31 from 10:30-Noon at The Charles Hall Museum and Heritage Center, Bld 2 meeting room for a Corn Bead Necklace class. The cost of the class is $25 per person. All materials are included. Children ages 9-12 will pay $20 if accompanied by a paying adult. Participants will make a beautiful 32-inch necklace with locally grown corn beads and colorful glass beads strung on traditional sinew.
Instructor, Tonya Dockery will discuss the stories of the struggles and survival of the Cherokee during the Forced Removal of 1838 known as The Trail of Tears and how the legend of corn beads is tied to the Removal. From 1838-1839, over 16,000 Cherokee people in the southeastern U.S. were forced to leave their ancestral homelands on the Trail of Tears with over ¼ of the population dying from disease, starvation and exposure. Pam Mathews, museum historian, will review the route the Cherokee and some Creek took through Monroe County to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). The TOT passes by the Hall Museum.
Tonya is a life-long resident of Tellico Plains, and a special friend and volunteer to the Hall Museum. She travels the Southeast doing programs and teaching classes that portrays the lifestyle of the Appalachian families between the time period of the late 1700’s-early 1800’s. You will find Tonya demonstrating these old-time skills at the Hall Museum’s Cherohala Skyway Festival and the Hall Museum’s Appalachian Christmas event the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
The class is a museum fundraiser sponsored by the Hall Museum and Tonya, who is donating her time. Profits will be used to further the museum’s educational outreach regarding the Trail of Tears. The Hall Museum is designated by the National Park Service/ National Trails as a certified site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. For more information email, [email protected]
